The Leaning Tower of Bologna: Closure and Restoration Plans

It has been decided that the square around the medieval “leaning tower” in the Italian city of Bologna will be closed for several years, reports The Guardian.

Experts are concerned that the structure of the 12th-century Garisenda Tower, which stands in front of the twice-tall Asinelli Tower, “leans” too much to the side.

– Must be closed

Bologna’s mayor, Matteo Lepore, says the closure of Piazza di Porta Ravegnana is necessary to save the Garisenda tower.

– We don’t intervene because we think it could collapse at any time, we intervene because we want to make it safe and restore it, he says according to The Guardian.

Had enough – threw the sons out

The 48-meter-tall tower has been the subject of much discussion in Bologna, after researchers from the city’s university discovered an abnormal increase in the tower’s sway.

Leaner than the Leaning Tower of Pisa

The tower leans four degrees outwards. Italy’s most famous Leaning Tower, in Pisa. scoops out 3.9 degrees. It is currently being watched closely for cracks and sensors have been installed to track any shifting.

Over the next few years, the foundation will be supported with new materials to make the structure safer.

The adjacent Asinelli Tower is also closed as a result of the redevelopment.

The Bologna City Council establishes a special committee to oversee the Garisenda’s restoration.

– We seek the best possible professionalism, nationally and internationally. We will look for anyone who can help us, Lepore said.

Citizens fear collapse

The mayor has thus stated that they do not fear that the tower will collapse, but there are many from Bologna who actually fear this.

– I am afraid to think about losing something that is part of the city’s soul, says author Carlo Lucarelli, to Corriere della Sera.

– I have always taken the two towers for granted, but with love, in the same way that you can take the presence of a brother for granted, he continues.

It is not known exactly how long Piazza di Porta Ravegnana will be closed as a result of the redevelopment, but according to the mayor it will be several years.

The Two Leaning Towers

The Garisenda and Asinelli towers are named after the rival families who built them.

It is believed that it was a way for them to compete for their power and wealth, and the towers are located at what used to be the entrance to the city.

The tower is quoted several times in Dante Alighieri’s book “Divine Comedy” and “Le Rime”, and Charles Dickens wrote about it in the book “Pictures from Italy.”
