The Last of Us: Part II Remaster Director Discusses PS5 Upgrade and Player Criticism

The Last of Us: Part II remaster game director Matthew Gallant admittedwhich does not understand the criticism of the new product from individual players, because this is “the best way to beat the game”:

In the same interview, Gallant said that the visual leap between the original sequel and the remaster is reminiscent of the transition from The Last of Us on PS3 and The Last Of Us Remastered on PS4. The situation is especially similar because the original and the sequel were released at the end of the “life cycle” of the consoles.

According to the author, the PS4 “squeezed out all the juice” with the sequel, while transferring the game to PS5 gave additional technical freedom. Gallant understands that not all changes of this kind are easy to notice from the outside, but the remaster still represents the “most beautiful” version of the sequel.

At the same time, Gallant said that he was especially pleased with the integration of the controller’s capabilities DualSense, which expands tactile sensations while playing the game. According to him, some effects will be felt by the user to varying degrees – for example, rain or gunfire cause different tactile feedback.

The author is also glad that the developers added special features from the updated version of the original to the remaster – such as audio recording of cinematic moments.

Moreover, during the development of the hardcore mode No Return the creators tried to put the “combat system” at the forefront – in the main game, battles become part of the story and help it, but in the new mode the conditions are different, which opened up an additional field for experimentation.

The release of the remaster of The Last of Us: Part 2 will take place on January 19. The game recently received high marks from critics, who praised various innovations in this version.
