The Last of Us 3 – what could the next installment of the series look like?

The biggest enthusiasts already have The Last of Us Part II behind them. Naughty Dog, the masters of animation, again did not disappoint in the matter of history, which continued the adventures of Ellie and Joel in the post-apocalyptic world. The heroes moved to the devastated, dark Seattle, where they met new enemies, as well as allies who helped the girl who was immune to the plague, and maybe even a woman, because Ellie has changed radically over the past 5 years – in terms of character and appearance .

The Last of Us 3 or a new IP?

The latest exclusive production, available only on the PlayStation 4 consoles, turned out to be a sales hit, because in three days from the world premiere more than 4 million units have already been sold. One can say that The Last of Us 2 sells like fresh rolls, and nothing promises to slow down sales – a lot of people are also waiting for price reductions, so it is likely that this will be the most-bought exclusive production for Sony consoles.

Neil Druckmann, the director of the title, has informed his fans that he is already thinking about a new project that would obviously aim at PlayStation 5, the upcoming “blue” device. It will be a new, mysterious IP or The Last of Us 3 – to remind you, Nathan Drake, the main character of the Uncharted series, has retired, so Naughty Dog is not going to move the brand for now.

Director and screenwriter of the latest title, the so-called “Pooches” announced that TLOU 3 needs an emotional core, something fans will fall in love with, as was the case with one. The community knows, thanks to TLOU 2, more and more about the epidemic, so coming up with more curiosities and creating twists and turns that will plunder, the proverbial, a pumpkin, will not be as easy as in the case of the game released a week ago. Let’s assume, however, that Neil Druckmann is going to create a continuation of post-apocalyptic IP, delivering another amazing adventure deepening Ellie’s story.

The following piece of text is one big spoiler directed at people who have the story behind The Last of Us 2 behind them!

Tears of happiness and sadness

It was what Ellie was afraid of alone – loneliness. The last hours of The Last of Us 2 have taken the heart of everyone who has had contact with the game. There were tears of sadness and tears of happiness. The first, when Jesse got a bullet in the head, when Tommy was immobilized, when Yara was shot by the WLF, and the second, when Abby spared Dina or when it turned out that Joel’s brother somehow survived.

Naughty Dog knew how to direct the script and create characters to evoke many emotions in the players – both positive and negative. Each character had their past as well as plans for the future. Some were irritating, some were intriguing, but that was supposed to be – according to many Lev is a kid who should not appear in Abby’s history, because he was boring. But is a thirteen-year-old child developed enough to have a de facto conversation with a developed woman? He asked simple questions that often forced the antagonist to think.

Strong text was the boy’s question whether WLF, the organization to which Abby belonged, tortures people. The woman’s answer was yes, because the “wolves” did not shun violence. It hurt, however, when Lev asked if Abby was also committing such acts – the player turned on a reminder lamp about Joel and a golf club, which Jerry’s daughter had cut to pieces by “Father Ellie”.

Abby and Lev, after their experiences in Santa Barbara, went to the island of Catalina, the place where supposedly reside the Fireflies, an organization that was supposed to prevent the spread of the plague. The local commander announced that he had gathered people and supplies from the existing posts, and Abby informed him that there would soon be more of them. While in The Last of Us 3 we would still meet Abby, I would love to know how she arrived, or rather, whether she arrived at her destination, and whether the Skylights really are sitting on the island, not the fake people. The issue of the son of a pious seraphist looks interesting too – it is not known how the organization would take him or how he would find himself in new company.

Thirst for revenge

Of course, things around Ellie look much more interesting. At the very beginning you have to mention her family, Dina, JJ (son of Dina and Jesse) and Tommy. Tommy, like in one, mixed up a lot, encouraging the debilitated Ellie to take revenge on Abby. He learned that she was in Santa Barbara, asking the main character to go to the desert and finish what she wanted from the beginning of the adventure in Jackson. JJ’s mother did not like it very much, she clearly expressed her dissatisfaction – for her, you could say, momentary happiness, Ellie was not eager for more fights, which infuriated Tommy.

Joel’s “daughter” had a confusion in her head preventing her from falling asleep. In the end, she decided to go to the area where the Rattlesnake faction was. Dina set the condition – either revenge or family – Ellie chose the former. This caused the disappearance of Dina and JJ from the farmhouse, so you can be sure that in a potential continuation it will be explained where the chosen heroine went. It is very possible that she chose Jackson, though it is not known if she has what to look for there – she quarreled with Tommy, and the death of Jesse, who came from there, would only cause unnecessary, unpleasant memories or fools. Such distraction would certainly not help calmly raise a child. A strong blow for Ellie would be if the creators no longer wanted to show Dina and would explain such a turn of events that no one knows where that woman went – unlikely, but possible.

Who saved him?

The situation with the slightly disabled Joel’s brother also looks interesting. He miraculously survived a shot in the head which damaged his parietal lobe of the brain, corresponding to, among others for movement. You can see that the hero is limping on his left leg and his right eye is damaged. I’d like to see how injured Ellie and Dina reacted, especially the latter, to the dead Jesse and seriously injured Tommy. Who saved Tommy? It was a long way to Jackson, so maybe it was someone from the wolves stationed in a nearby camp or hospital, which we took to dust on the second day of fun with Ellie.

While visiting Santa Barbara, we encounter Rattlesnakes. The creators were not tempted to present their history and goals, except that they catch and force people to work. It is not known if they are also stationed in other areas or what they really want to achieve. It is possible that in the three, similar to the seraphists of the two, they will play a greater role. The situation would have been interesting if the Skylights whom Abby had communicated with were the Rattlesnakes.

If the action in The Last of Us 3 is set in Seattle again, we would certainly find out which faction won the bloody conquests. Wolves attacked seraphists, but suffered heavy losses, especially by their own member (Abby), through which Isaac, WLF commander, was murdered. It is also important who took the most important post after Isaac – Abby left, persevering, non-submissive Emmanuel Alvarez (Manny) was murdered by Tommy, and Nora was assassinated.

Easy decision?

It is certain that The Last of Us 3 would introduce the next heroes of flesh and blood who, like Jesse, Dina or Abby, would play an important role in the presented linear story. I think that Neil Druckmann, looking at sales results, will be more smiling towards the continuation of Ellie’s adventures – if we get a few changes in the engine, again well-designed animations, refined mechanics and stunning graphics, then we can be sure that we will receive the title that every PlayStation 5 owner will need to be familiar with.
