In 1962, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for political activity in the African National Progress Party (its main task was to unite all Africans into a single people to fight for their rights and freedoms – to give blacks the right to vote and put an end to the apartheid system), which the country’s leaders considered terrorist. The new president of South Africa Frederick de Claire in 1990 lifted the ban on the activities of the ANC, and after 27 years 6 months and 6 days, Mandela was released. He was greeted by a huge crowd of people to whom he addressed: “My goal is to abolish all the laws of apartheid and hold free elections on the principle of“ one person – one vote ”.

In the next parliamentary election, blacks received 63% of the mandate, and Mandela became the first black president of South Africa.

Died Lev Yashin

The legendary goalkeeper died on March 20, 1990 at the age of 60 – in the last years of his life he suffered from stomach cancer. His death was a blow not only for Soviet football, but also for the world, because “it belonged to people of the whole Earth”, as the weekly Soccer wrote.

Viktor Tsoi died

The idol of the Soviet youth of the “perestroika” generation died on August 15, 1990 in a car accident in Latvia.

On the morning of this day, he went fishing on the lake, but on the way back he lost control: his dark blue Moskvich-2141 collided with Ikarus at a bend. The bus driver tried to avoid a collision, but it was too late: he was carried away into the river, and Tsoi’s car was thrown back 22 meters. When eyewitnesses arrived at the scene, the singer was already dead.

The incident on the same day was announced on the radio – Tsoi’s parents listened to the news release, from which they learned about the death of their son. The scale of the tragedy for his family and fans of his music was incredible: on the day of the funeral, about 30 thousand people visited the grave of the singer.

Unification of Germany

In November 1989, the Berlin Wall collapsed, and a year later, on October 3, 1990, German unity was restored: the German Democratic Republic and West Berlin became part of the Federal Republic of Germany. All state institutions of the German Democratic Republic were liquidated, the fleet and army disbanded.

The country gained full sovereignty on March 15, 1991 – on the day the Final Settlement Treaty came into force with respect to Germany, also known as the “2 + 4 Agreement”. It was concluded in Moscow on September 12, 1990 between the parties of the FRG and the GDR and the four victorious powers in World War II.

The collapse of the USSR

Caught Chikatilo

An exemplary family man and caring grandfather for 12 years committed murders involving violence, cannibalism and necrophilia. He twice came into the attention of the investigation, but both times he was released – the blood and sperm tests did not coincide. It is not known how accurately Chikatilo killed during this time: the investigation charged him with 53 murders, but there are reports of 65 victims.

The maniac was detained on November 20, 1990: at that time he had been followed for several days, and after he tried to get acquainted with a minor boy, three law enforcement officers arrested him. Chikatilo was silent for 10 days, but after a lengthy conversation with a psychiatrist he began to confess to his deed.

For the murder of 21 boys, 14 girls and 18 girls, a 56-year-old maniac was sentenced to death and shot in 1994.
