The last election notifications in the district are now going out – Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district

The postal vote for the new Bundestag is already possible now. If you move and want to vote at your new place of residence, you should observe important deadlines.

When the new Bundestag is elected on Sunday, September 26th, those eligible to vote in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district will have to orientate themselves in three different directions, depending on where they live.

One district, divided into three constituencies

The district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald is one of the few – in Baden-Württemberg there are 4 of 44 districts – divided into three different constituencies. The 19 municipalities in the west and south of Freiburg together with the urban district of Freiburg form constituency 281 Freiburg. Further south, from Hartheim and Bad Krozingen, a total of 13 communities belong to the constituency 282 Lörrach-Müllheim. The entire district east of Freiburg with 18 communities belongs to the constituency 288 Waldshut.

The municipalities are also responsible for delivering the official election notification.

By the end of this week, the election notification should have been delivered everywhere. Anyone who has not yet received a voting notification should go to their community by 5 September at the latest to clarify this. The citizens’ offices in the town halls are usually responsible.

Officially, in the week of September 6th to 10th, the electoral rolls of the municipalities are available for inspection in the town halls. This is then also the official deadline for objections. Michael Haußmann, election supervisor for the city of Freiburg, can not remember that in the 20 years in which he had to do with the elections, there were objections to the electoral roll.

Re-registrations are only possible before September 5th

The electoral roll was drawn up on August 15th, the 42nd day before the election. You record the eligible voters registered there for each municipality up to that point. However, if you are moving and want to vote at your new place of residence, you must apply to the local council by September 5th, the 21st day before the election, at the latest. Then you will be added to the electoral roll at your new place of residence and deleted in your old one.

If you fail to do this, you will always be entitled to vote at your previous place of residence. Either you go to the polling station there on election day or you apply for a voting slip from this municipality beforehand. This can also be done online via the homepages of the municipalities and is already possible now. You can then vote by post with a ballot paper.

Strong demand for postal voting documents

In fact, the demand for postal voting documents is already enormous, since – as in the state elections in March – many eligible voters prefer voting by post to going to the polling station, not least because of the corona pandemic. “Only two hours after we had distributed the voting notices, the first inquiries about postal voting documents were there,” explains Dietmar Siebler, chief office manager of the Merdingen community. As with the state elections, people in the Tuniberg community expect extra work in counting the postal voting results and occupy the council chamber for this.

Whoever orders a voting slip should not lose it

The ballot papers with the postal voting documents will be delivered as soon as the municipalities have received the ballot papers, which has also been going on for several days. However, if the voting slip and postal voting documents do not reach the eligible voters or are lost, replacement documents can be requested from the municipality no later than 12 noon on the day before the election. The originally issued voting slip will then be blocked automatically. Anyone who has received their ballot but simply forgets to carry out the requested postal vote can use their ballot to go to a polling station in their constituency on election day and take part in the ballot box. The decisive factor is always the voting slip: If you have applied for it, you can only vote with a voting slip, by letter or at the ballot box.

However, if you want to vote in the normal way on election Sunday, simply go to the voting room that is named in the election notification that has now been sent. And if you have lost this voting notification by then, your identity card alone is sufficient to be able to vote.
