Royal missionaries Paul Magnette (PS) and Bart De Wever (N-VA) arrived at the Royal Palace at 3 p.m. on Saturday to present the King with a new report on the progress of discussions for the formation of a federal government. The sovereign decided to extend their mission until August 17. “The King invites the parties concerned to show a great sense of responsibility in order to be able to quickly conclude a government agreement”, underlines the Palace in a press release.

Last Friday, the sovereign had asked them to “bring together as quickly as possible the presidents of parties which can provide a broad basis for the formation of a government”.
For the moment, a “bubble of five” parties has agreed to start these negotiations. These are the PS, the N-VA, the CD&V, the sp.a and the cdH. This “bubble” is still looking for at least one additional partner to form a new federal majority, given that it has at this stage only 70 deputies (out of 150).
Open Vld and MR remain united, while the president of the N-VA has declared that he does not want to form a government with the MR. The Greens, on Tuesday, rejected the proposals of the royal missionaries, deeming them insufficient.
Bart De Wever and Paul Magnette have therefore decided to see Georges-Louis Bouchez (MR) and Egbert Lachaert (Open Vld) again. The greens (Ecolo-Groen) will also be received “as quickly as possible”.
