The Italian steals a thousand manuscripts, the writer Hanna Bervoets is also a victim

Bestselling author Margaret Atwood and actor Ethan Hawke were also robbed of their jobs.

The Italian Filippo Bernardini worked in London for the American publisher Simon & Schuster. He used the knowledge he acquired in the publishing world to get his hands on unpublished manuscripts by known and unknown authors from August 2016 to January 2021.

He used fake email addresses to impersonate someone else. The thefts only ended when he was arrested at a New York airport in January of last year.

It is unclear what exactly the man meant by the manuscripts. Bernardini could be sentenced to 20 years in prison. The court will announce his sentence on April 5.

The writer Hanna Bervoets (38) wrote the novels Lieve Céline, Alles water was and Ivanov and Welkom in het Rijk der Zieken.
