The irrigated areas in Sliven and Shumen will increase by thousands of acres after the reconstruction of canals – 2024-03-15 14:48:50


The areas for irrigation in the regions of Sliven and Shumen. This becomes possible through the rehabilitation of irrigation systems channels, which is financed under sub-measure 4.3 “Support for investments in infrastructure related to the development, modernization or adaptation of agriculture and forestry” of measure 4 “Investments in tangible assets” of the Program for the development of rural areas 2014-2020.

The area for irrigation in the territory of Sliven region will be increased to 15,723 decares. This will be achieved through reconstruction on a highway channel from which water is supplied in the section from the village of Gavrailovo to the village of Topolchane. At the time of project preparation, the irrigated areas for the last economic year were a total of 9,380 decares. The determined financial resource for the repair works is BGN 8,150,735 excluding VAT.

The area for irrigation in the territory of the Shumen region will increase to 15,321 decares through the reconstruction of the “Vinitsa” irrigation canal. At the time of project preparation, the efficiency ratio (Efficiency) of the section of the canal was 4% and water was transported through it to a total of 2,114 decares. After realization of the investment, it will be possible to increase the efficiency to nearly 69%. The determined financial resource for the repair works is BGN 6,413,274 excluding VAT.

With the reconstruction of parts of the irrigation canals, their capacity will be increased in both areas, their water distribution and operation will be improved and conditions will be created for their easier cleaning. The repair works aim to reduce water losses and prevent flooding of adjacent agricultural lands.
