The International Federation creates new commissions on security, mental health and aging

Lhe International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has created new working commissions or commissioned new functions to existing ones to address issues such as the safeguarding of athletes against harassment, the mental health of gymnasts or the aging of the population.

The president of the FIG, the Japanese Morinari Watanabe, has distributed among nine commissions the function of facilitating that sport “not just entertainment, but also a factor of social change towards a better society. There has been a great change in the importance given to values ​​and we must adopt this trend in favor of greater solidarity, equality and friendship. The FIG working commissions will be: Anti-doping, medical and mental health; appliances; Athletes; education; Marketing, brand and television rights; Parkour; gender equality; Support for developing countries; and Safeguard.

In addition, there will be specific working groups dedicated, among other things, to how gymnastics can improve the health of older people and reduce health expenses, to the reform of the electoral system of the federation and to the innovation of the competition.

The former Spanish gymnast Marta Bobo is on the education commission. Colombian Juan Medina, president of the South American Gymnastics Confederation, also chairs the FIG commission for developing countries, of which Paraguayan Santiago Delgado and Nicaraguan Kenya Herrera are also members.

Argentina’s Micaela Buono appears in the parkour and sports competitions and her compatriot Ariel Milanesio in gender equality.
