They pointed out that such a move would create more opportunities for biomass producers to expand the market and increase international sales of their products.

Andrey Smaļuks, General Manager of Baltpool, explained that biomass trading from ships takes place, as usual, on Baltpool’s electronic trading platform, following the standardized trading rules. “However, participants can now register outlets in ports and start buying and selling biomass from ships. This is important for biomass producers in the Baltic States and Poland, as well as for Scandinavian buyers and heat producers, who buy about 30-50% of biomass from ships in the Baltics.” said Baltpool CEO.

Baltpool noted that all biomass products can be traded from ships in ports, as is the case with conventional biomass auctions, provided that the trade takes place in accordance with the rules. It also allows buyers to register sales outlets in ports, where they can choose biomass products from different producers.

Baltpool International Biofuel Exchange is an e-commerce platform for standardized biomass product auctions. In Lithuania, Baltpool also organizes wood and heat auctions and administers public service obligations in the field of electricity. Baltpool currently operates in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Baltpool is part of Lithuania EPSO-G state-owned energy transmission and exchange groups.

According to the Latvian Renewable Energy Association (LAEF), biomass is an important energy source in energy-efficient combined heat and power generation and district heating. Solid biomass is the most commonly used resource in renewable heat production, accounting for 90% of all renewable heat and 16% of district heating. Biomass accounts for 18% of renewable electricity production.

Biomass is the most widely used renewable energy resource European In the Union. 70% of biomass is obtained from forests.
