The Intel Core i9-11900K CPU leak confirms only 8 cores, reaching 5.3 GHz

Intel is preparing new 11th generation Core processors with a codename Rocket Lake-S. The top representative will be Intel Core i9-11900Kwhich will replace the previous model i9-10900K. However, a look at the specifications raises the question of how much better it will be. While the previous model was 10-core (with support for up to 20 threads at once), now we will have to settle for 8 cores and 16 threads. Even frequencies won’t help much. The fundamental frequency should drop from 3.7 to 3.5 GHz, the maximum Boost on all cores is then 4.8 GHz. The boost on one core is 5.2 GHz (10900K had 5.3 GHz), however in the case of Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) both processors have the same very nice frequency of 5.3 GHz.

The amount of shared L3 cache memory was also reduced from 20 MB to 16 MB (still 2 MB per kernel). The L2 cache should then be specific to each kernel separately, and at 512 KB per kernel we should have a total of 4 MB. There is talk that TDP PL1 will be at 125 W, however PL2 will be very high at 250 W. However, the novelty will be built on a new core architecture Cypress Cove, which should bring a significant increase in IPC, so the new processor should have nothing to be ashamed of, despite the reduction in the number of cores. We have a DDR4-3200 memory controller, support for 20 PCIe 4.0 lines instead of 16 PCIe 3.0 lines. The new series is to support HDMI 2.0b, DP 1.4a, HBR3, and promises support for 12-bit AV1 / HEVC video and E2E compression. USB 3.2 Gen2x2, Thunderbolt 4 (USB4) and 2.5GbE LAN are also expected to appear here.

CPU Cores / fibers Tact (basic)

Tact (Boost all cores)

Tact (Boost 1 core)

L2 / L3 cache TDP (PL1 / PL2) TVB
i9-11900K 8C/16T 3,5 GHz 4,8 GHz 5,3 GHz 4MB/16MB 125W/250W year
i7-11700K 8C/16T 4,6 GHz 5,0 GHz 4MB/16MB 125W/225-250W? year
i5-11600K 6C / 12T 4,7 GHz 4,9 GHz 3MB/12MB -/- born
i5-11400 6C / 12T 4,2 GHz 4,4 GHz 3MB/12MB 65W/125W born

The leaks also revealed less powerful 11th generation models. An 8-core Core i7-11700K with TVB support should also come, as well as two more 6-core i5-11600K and i5-11400 models. In the latter case, we should see 65W TDP PL1 and 125W PL2.
