Andrea Sawatzki (60) is one of the most famous actresses in Germany. But the red-haired beauty didn’t have an easy childhood.

Andrea Sawatzki: Childhood marked by illness
In an interview with “Bild” Andrea Sawatzki talked about her past. At the age of eight she looked after her father, who had Alzheimer’s disease: “My mother worked night shifts as a nurse at the hospital. She cared for my father during the day when I was at school and she was supposed to be sleeping. […] I took over when I got home from school so she could get some sleep and then looked after my father through the night when I was supposed to be sleeping. People with Alzheimer’s hardly sleep themselves.“
This also had a negative impact on their school. “I often didn’t go at all because I was just too tired“, says Sawatzki. Creativity gave her the strength to carry on: “Writing adventure essays was about the only thing that interested me at school besides art, sports and music, and for me it was pretty much the only way to get a good grade.“
But the frustration has not continued into her present. Looking back, she says, “All that remains are the beautiful pictures, which is a pretty good arrangement of nature. Growing up, I didn’t really think about how my life was different from everyone else’s.“

How Andrea Sawatzki almost gave up on her dreams
She continues: “II didn’t have any comparison options either. Children tend to see their home as the nicest, best home, to protect their parents and not to bring anything outside that is none of the outside world’s business. So I found myself in this cocoon. It was such a big task that I didn’t even think about anything else.“
When she was 16, her father died and Andrea decided to move out. She moved in with a friend and dropped out of school. At 17 she worked as a waitress and had “actually thought about continuing to spend my life like this. It was also a good feeling to finally have our own money in our pockets because we were chronically broke at home“.
But then fate struck: she happened to meet her former drama teacher from school, who motivated her to apply to drama school. This brought the star to where she is now.

Acting has great meaning for Andrea Sawatzki and has given her a lot for her life: “At first I thought I could escape my own life and hide behind my characters. But around the age of 30, I realized that even in acting you always have to take yourself with you and that you can’t play a role without bringing your own life into it.“
