The Importance of Vaccination in Preventing Rabies Transmission to Humans

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Head of Health and Social Affairs of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Cri Sajjana Prajna Wekadigunawan said that vaccination can prevent transmission of rabies to humans. “Vaccination can prevent rabies from being transmitted to humans,” he said in a discussion entitled “Protecting Families and Pets from Rabies Transmission” which was followed online in Jakarta, Friday. The woman who is familiarly called Weka, said that vaccination is necessary considering that every 15 minutes someone dies due to rabies virus infection in the world. “Forty percent of them are children,” he said.
Therefore, he mentioned a number of groups that needed to be vaccinated against rabies earlier by looking at the intensity of interactions with animals.

He explained that there are at least three doses of prophylactic type of vaccination, namely dose one, which is given according to an appointment schedule with the doctor, then dose two, which is given seven days after the first dose, and dose three, which is given 21 days or 28 days after the first dose. “The dose of this vaccine might be added if we are among people who are at high risk of being infected with the rabies virus,” he said.
