The Importance of Early Prostate Cancer Screening: Advice for Men Under 50

Jakarta, tvOnenews.com – When they are 50 years old or younger, men are advised to be screened for prostate cancer, especially if they have a family history of similar cancer.

“For the prostate, we start getting ready to have it checked as soon as we enter the fifth decade, especially if there is a family history of prostate cancer,” said Head of the RSCM Urology Medical Staff Group Dr Dr Irfan Wahyudi, Sp.U(K) at a press conference in Jakarta, Friday.

According to Irfan, to check whether you have prostate cancer or not, you should not wait for symptoms such as not urinating as smoothly as usually becoming more painful or other symptoms to see a doctor.

Because, he continued, the earlier the cause of urinary problems is known, the easier treatment will be.

Apart from that, if prostate cancer is found, it can be treated more quickly so the chance of recovery is higher.

“Don’t wait for the severity of the symptoms, but pay attention to complaints such as urinating not as smoothly as before and so on. We have been consulted from the start. If detected early, treated early, the recovery is more than 90 percent,” he said.

Meanwhile, urology expert, Prof. Dr. Agus Rizal Ardy Hariandy Hamid, Sp.U(K), FICRS revealed the importance of early examination for prostate cancer in men aged 50 years, because quite a few prostate cancers are without symptoms.

Agus said the main examinations in confirming prostate cancer are anamnesis on the course of the disease, digital rectal examination, serum PSA and transrectal or transabdominal ultrasonography.

According to him, a definite diagnosis can be obtained from the results of a prostate biopsy or surgical specimen. Early detection of prostate cancer allows treatment as early as possible, so that it can be treated before it spreads and this can reduce the possibility of death from prostate cancer.

“For PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen), there is no need for preparation, unlike checking blood sugar, you have to fast. With the speed at RSCM the results can be obtained in three hours. You already know the PSA value. We recommend that PSA be included in a comprehensive health examination,” said Agus.

2020 GLOBOCAN data shows that prostate cancer is the sixth most common cause of death in men, with a global incidence of 30.7 per 100,000 men and a mortality rate of 7.7 per 100,000 men.

In Indonesia, prostate cancer is the 5th most common cancer case in male patients with an incidence rate of 11.6 cases per 100,000 men and a death rate of 4.5 per 100,000 men. (ant/mii)
