The Importance of Diphtheria and Tetanus Vaccination: Guidelines and Recommendations

Vaccination against diphtheria and tetanus is recommended for all people, including those who have already been vaccinated in childhood. The epidemiologist professor Emilian Popovici urges the residents of Caracas to repeat these vaccines once every 10 years, because it was found that they lose their protective effect:

Complications of diphtheria and tetanus include breathing difficulties, heart failure, paralysis and even death with a higher mortality rate in young children.

The vaccine against diphtheria is included in the National Vaccination Program in our country and is administered to babies and children by the pediatrician or family doctor, as follows:

At 2 months – The hexavalent vaccine (diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis-poliomyelitis vaccine-Haemophilus B-hepatitis B – DTPa-VPI-Hib-Hep. B) At 4 months – The hexavalent vaccine At 11 months – The hexavalent vaccine At 6 years (booster ) – The tetravalent vaccine (acellular diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-poliomyelitic vaccine – DTPa-IPV) At 14 years (booster) – The trivalent vaccine (acellular diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine – DTPa)

The tetanus vaccine, medically known as tetanus toxoid or ATPA vaccine for short, is the only method of preventing tetanus. However, in the event of an injury, proper wound care is important to help prevent infection. Doctors can also use drugs to prevent this disease if a person is seriously injured and is not vaccinated against tetanus.

Among the tetanus vaccines available in Romania, some also protect against other diseases:

DTPa-VPI-Hib-Hep B: hexavalent vaccine, a combination of bacterial and viral antigens that provides immunity against potentially severe diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, poliomyelitis, Haemophilus influenzae type B infection and hepatitis B. It is indicated in infants and children from 6 weeks of age for primary and booster vaccination; DTPa-IPV: tetravalent vaccine, provides protection against diphtheria, tetanus, and poliomyelitis. This vaccine is indicated for primary active immunization in infants starting at 2 months of age, booster immunization one year after the first vaccination, during the second year after vaccination and booster in children and adolescents aged 4 to 13 years; DTPa: trivalent vaccine, acellular diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, indicated for adults for booster.
