The Impact of the Deutschlandticket on CO2 Emissions: Is it Meeting Expectations?

With the Deutschlandticket, introduced in May, our eastern neighbors can use (almost) all German public transport for only 49 euros per month. At first glance a very attractive offer. It seems, however, that the German government has underestimated the effect of the scheme on overall emissions from the transport sector has overestimated.

Why is this important?

More public transport is one of the measures most often cited to reduce our CO2 emissions. However, to encourage more people to commute by public transport, trains, buses and subways must be affordable.

The essence: Although the Deutschland ticket was introduced to reduce emissions from the transport sector, the impact is expected to be less than expected.

De context: A study by the German Environmental Agency (UBA) recently showed that Germany managed to reduce its carbon footprint between 2021 and 2022, despite the reopening of a number of coal-fired power plants.
