The Impact of Sugary Drinks on Brain Health and Dementia Risk: What You Need to Know

Jakarta

Not only what one eats, what a person drinks can also affect brain health, you know.

Scientists in Germany found that drinking drinks high in sugar increases the risk of dementia, quoted from The Sun. These drinks include fruit drinks, flavored milk drinks and high-fat fizzy drinks.

Some types of drinks include the claim ‘sugar free’, for example packaged fruit juice drinks. Please note, packaged drinks like this also have the risk of triggering health problems. In this regard, experts do not include further explanation regarding the reasons why increasing sugar intake can increase the risk of disease.

However, some research suggests that this may be because sugar can cause inflammation, which is thought to play a role in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of this condition.

Currently, there is no cure for dementia. However, three promising drugs to slow its progression are in trials.

Meanwhile, experts say that focusing on improving lifestyle is the best way to fight dementia.

Scientists from the University of Giessen wrote that consuming drinks with free and natural sugars was ‘significantly associated with the risk of dementia’.

They found that consuming a small amount of milk drinks, such as a McDonald’s vanilla milkshake each day, was associated with a 39 percent increased risk of dementia over 10 years. Meanwhile, drinking a can of full-fat soda increases the risk of dementia by 21 percent.

Meanwhile, consuming foods with free sugar or natural sugar did not find a significant relationship.

In a separate study, it was found that consuming sugar in liquid form was much worse than consuming sugar in solid form. This is partly because the brain does not register liquid sugar calories the same way it does calories from solid foods.

Drinking calories doesn’t provide the same signals of fullness as eating them. This means a person will eat more and be at risk of gaining weight.

Apart from increasing body weight, liquid sugar calories can increase blood sugar levels and insulin resistance which can cause diabetes.
