The Impact of Smoking Husbands on Low Birth Weight Babies: Community Nutrition Expert

Jakarta (ANTARA) –

Community nutrition expert who graduated from the University of Indonesia, Dr Tan Shot Yen, said that one of the impacts of a husband who smokes is that his wife gives birth to a baby with a low birth weight due to not getting enough oxygen.

The problem here, he continued at a press conference in Jakarta, Thursday, is not about nicotine, odors or passive smoking but about the smoke produced, whether from cigarettes, cigars or vape.

In fact, he added, babies to grow or children to live need oxygen. Therefore, wives who have husbands who smoke can give birth to babies with low birth weight or LBW because they do not get enough oxygen while in the womb.

“Moreover, it was even sadder, someone said to me that I had been to the community health center three times, once to a child specialist, but why was it still groggy when I slept. I shot it easily, ‘is there a smoker in the house? Yes, the father’,” said Tan Shot Yen .

Babies with low birth weight are known to be at risk of experiencing physical development disorders, stunted growth and mental development which will affect the future.

He believes that sometimes it is necessary to tease the public with issues that seem rather cruel and frightening, such as the life expectancy of smokers, the health problems that smokers can experience such as strokes and heart attacks, and other things.

On the other hand, he also reminded the need for prospective mothers and fathers to have an understanding of health conditions before pregnancy or preconception occurs.
