The Impact of Covid-19: Economic Difficulties for 55% of Mexico City Residents

During the covid-19 pandemic, 55% of Mexico City residents had economic difficulties making rent or mortgage payments.

According to the study “The covid decade in Mexico: Mexican cities and habitability conditions in times of pandemic”, by UNAM, 32% of those interviewed had to change residence, 18% to another home in the Mexico City and 14% to another entity in the country.

The main reason for the change of address was the difficulty in paying the rent or that they were asked to vacate the home.

The study highlights that returning to the home of parents, other relatives or friends was an important option when faced with the need to change housing.

Regarding changes in the availability of housing services, the text indicates that, in general, there was a decrease in the number of participants who benefit from them.

With the exception of electricity, the services to which access was most reduced during the pandemic were the internet, exclusive toilets, garbage collection and public lighting, which implies a setback in relation to the satisfaction of the right to adequate housing for the population of the country’s capital.

MEASURES IN OTHER COUNTRIES

The study highlights examples such as Argentina, which suspended the execution of judicial rulings whose purpose was the eviction of properties due to non-payment of rent, until January 31, 2021.

Austria established the suspension of evictions until June 2020 and the impossibility of terminating or canceling a residential lease contract due to total or partial default by the tenant whose economic capacity had been affected by the pandemic.
