The Impact of AI on the Job Market and Potential Solutions: Insights from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

In a new interview with The Atlantic, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman chided others in his industry for overly rosy predictions about AI’s impact on the job market.

Many people working on AI pretend that there will only be minor changes, that AI will only be an addition and no one will ever be replaced by itAltman told the magazine.Jobs will definitely disappear, period.

While this news would be unwelcome to most, the CEO doesn’t seem too stressed about it. Overall, he says, a world with AI will be better.

I don’t think we’ll want to go back to pre-AIAltman says.

As the Atlantic interviewer noted, one of Altman’s examples of professions where people would always prefer people is teaching.

This is ironic because in the same interview, the head of OpenAI expressed excitement at the prospect of artificial intelligence teachers that would provide “every child a better education than the best, richest, smartest child on Earth today.

None of this is particularly surprising. In the months since ChatGPT was released to the public last fall, people have not only become extremely worried about being replaced by AI, but are actually already losing their jobs to it.

This March, Goldman Sachs predicted that a whopping 300 million jobs could be lost to technology. Meanwhile, however, artificial intelligence could boost the gross domestic product by seven percent.

According to Altman, one solution is to provide an unconditional basic income. However, this would require the introduction of a global digital identification system so that money can be transferred to “proven people” and not to fraudsters using AI avatars.
