The IMET claims that the aid fund of the Generalitat in response to the taxi sector of the AMB

The president of the Metropolitan Taxi Institute (IMET) and Councilor for Mobility of the Barcelona City Council, Rosa Alarcón, claims to the Generalitat de Catalunya that the economic fund announced to give direct aid to the sectors affected by the closure of bars and restaurants , also cover the taxi sector in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

This is what Alarcón has assured:

“The taxi is one of the sectors hardest hit by the effects of the pandemic due to the sharp decline in mobility and economic activity, especially tourism, nightlife or professional transport.”

According to the president of the IMET “this impact is occurring in all metropolitan municipalities and has resulted in a collapse of employment and the demand for taxis”.

“We must act and take measures to protect this service, so it is essential that it be included in the aid line.”

According to the data available to the IMET, the reduction in the sector’s income is very high as a consequence of the pandemic, compromising the economic viability, present and future, of the public transport service.

Another effect at this juncture is the degree of occupancy of taxis, which has been reduced considerably, which leads to an oversaturation of the taxi rank network and the empty circulation of vehicles with a notable increase in the environmental impact on the metropolitan cities.

New restrictions

It is expected that the new restrictions on mobility in the coming days will have a very negative effect and will deepen the economic and social problems of a sector, made up of more than 13,000 people (most of them self-employed), which is already seriously affected.

All this situation leads those responsible for the Metropolitan Taxi Institute to formulate this request to the Generalitat to guarantee the survival of a sector that until now carried out more than 60 million races a year and transported 93 million passengers.
