With hindsight, we know that the Warriors’ decision to select Stephen Curry in 2009 was the right one. With the point guard, Golden State discovered the glory, the titles, and most of all, the franchise revolutionized the NBA game. 11 years later, no one questions the Warriors’ decision to have selected Stephen Curry with the 7th choice of the 2009 draft. Today, the leader is a triple champion, a double MVP, including one won unanimously, and a multiple All-Star. In fact, he is simply one of the best point guards in history.
But that, no one could have anticipated at the time. This is the reason why opinions were mixed on the evening of the draft. Some fans were happy to have a point guard capable of scoring both near and far, while others feared alchemy issues.
Because in 2009, the Warriors were the team of Monta Ellis, this formidable striker capable of enormous blows of brilliance. Not only was he the face of the Bay franchise, but he was also the darling of the Oracle Arena. It was therefore inevitably with great suspicion that he saw the point guard straight out of Davidson arrive.

But can we play together on stations 1 and 2? No. We just can’t. I want to win, and we will not win like that! You can’t compare Stephen Curry and me to Baron Davis and me!
Baron Davis was a veteran who knew, understood, mastered the NBA game, and most of all, he was very strong. You can’t combine two slim guards when you have to face lots of physically stronger teams. We will play fast, of course, but in playoffs the game slows down, and there we can not do anything.
Monta Ellis couldn’t be further from the plate… In the end, it was indeed by running and shooting that the Warriors arrived at the top. Where he was right, however, was that he and the Chef would probably never have won together. Clearly, the leaders of the Bay have made the right choice in separating this duo.
