The Hungarian sword team, composed by Áron Szilágyi, András Szatmári, Csanád Gémesi and Tamás Decsi, won the gold medal at the European Fencing Championships in Turkey on Monday, after defeating the Ukrainian team 45-39 in the early evening final, MTI writes.
The Hungarian national team started to be among the top eight in the team competition, and first they defeated the Poles and then the French in the semi-finals. In the final, they suffered thoroughly with the Ukrainian team behind the world rankings. From the Hungarian point of view, the final did not start well, because Áron Szilágyi and Csanád Gémesi also lost their asses 5-2, so the Ukrainians led by six inches. However, the finisher of the round, András Szatmári, won 9-5, so the disadvantage was reduced to two hits (13-15).

In eighth place in the individual, Gémesi defeated Yuri Cap 7-3, reversing the result (20-18). Szilágyi, the three-time Olympic champion, also found himself, winning his ass for 5-3, as he was not disturbed by Vasil Humen’s strange, jumping style. The best of the Ukrainians, Andriy Jagodka, won his ass against Satu Mare 9-4, with the Ukrainians leading again with an ink at the end of the second round (29-30).
Gémesi was better than Humen and Capat with two hits, so the finishing man, Szilágyi, could take the position at 40-37. Szilágyi fought the best in this ass and beat Jagodka 5-2, so the Hungarian national team won 45-39 in the final. The bronze-medal Hungarian sword team won the European Championship in 2018 at the Tokyo Olympics. With their recent success, they won the first Hungarian medal at the European Championships in Turkey.

But we solved that too, Csanád was super as always and we added to Szaty what we needed. I won my third European Gold, but it’s not boring at all! ” – evaluated Áron Szilágyi.
“I am very happy to have been successful this day too! We became European champions four years ago than we do now, but I can’t tell the difference between the two gold medals, dear to me both! ” Said Csanád Gémesi.
András Szatmári: “We considered it a chance at each of our matches, and it wasn’t that easy to process. But it worked and I am very happy about it! It was an interesting European Championship for me, but I’m traveling home with a gold medal, so it’s all good if it’s over! ”
Tamás Decsi: “I was ready to jump in all day, but it feels very good when it is not needed in the end… In the last six years we have won a lot of medals with this team, a little less gold. We want to collect this now for Paris. ”
