Supporters of this initiative find it abnormal that the 700,000 residents of Washington (a larger population than those of the states of Vermont or Wyoming) do not have a say at the federal level while they pay federal taxes.
The House of Representatives approved, Friday, June 26, the granting of state status to the federal capital of the United States, Washington DC, which would make it the 51st state of the country. This initiative was approved by 232 votes against 180 within the assembly controlled by the democrats. The Senate, with a Republican majority, should not however examine this proposal.
President Donald Trump has already publicly expressed his hostility to this measure, the consequence of which, according to him, would be to elect more Democrats to Congress. The people of Washington have only elected democratic mayors. Before the vote in the House, Republican parliamentarians denounced a Democratic maneuver and said that the granting of state status required an amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Some also considered that Washington did not have the necessary equipment and should rather be absorbed by Maryland.
