The house of Lorenzo Da Ponte for sale: Riccardo Muti’s anathema and the fight for cultural preservation

TREVISO – House of Lorenzo Da Ponte on sale. For years. But now comes Riccardo Muti’s anathema: «A disgrace, a poet who should be studied in high school. And in the media they talk about rappers, Maneskin, or Maneskot, not about true Italian culture.” The j’accuse of the maestro from the Prada Foundation, yesterday at the presentation of the Muti Italian Opera Academy, bounces back to Vittorio Veneto where the municipal administration is doing work to enhance Daponto’s itineraries and just two weeks ago inaugurated a plaque on the façade of the final resting place in the city of the illustrious fellow citizen, Mozart’s librettist. «I invite Riccardo Muti to Vittorio Veneto – says the councilor for culture Antonella Uliana – thanks to his sensitivity and this request we will perhaps be able to give birth to something positive».
There is a whole world in the Memoirs of Lorenzo Da Ponte: Treviso, Venice, Gorizia, Vienna then Dresden, London and New York.

But nothing or almost nothing was known about the places of life of the famous libertine and Mozart librettist in Ceneda. In a minimal perimeter of streets and squares, in an ancient Ceneda inhabited by a rich Jewish community protected by Catholicism. «In reality, no one knew where Da Ponte was born». Sergio De Nardi, an architect enlightened by the love of music, shows cadastral plans as he moves through the streets that have ancient names. «In the 19th century a German journalist landed on Ceneda. His name is Hermann von Lohner. He asks about the Ghetto, he arrives here, in today’s Via Da Ponte and they give him some general information. Hence the mistake about the house.”

INSIGHTS

RESEARCH
Fortunately, the answers all come from the land register and notarial deeds: and this is how De Nardi, in about 7 years of work, manages to reconstruct with definitive accuracy the movements of the famous libertine, born here in 1749 and died in New York 89 years later, and his family. You need to contact him to really know the history of the house (the real one), of the discovery and of the situation of the property. The building is located in via Manin: owned by the Paludetti family, it is in fact a former shoe shop, «closed for over twenty years. And the property has been on sale for a long time, since before it was discovered that Da Ponte was born here.” De Nardi, moved by his passion for the great libertine and poet, three years ago not only undertook an internal renovation project on his own to create a cultural center dedicated to Lorenzo da Ponte, but also found a family of sensitive industrialists. Everything came to a standstill due to excessive demand from the owners. «I was interested in a large local kitchen company. The idea was to carry out an acquisition of cultural patronage: the couple intended to open a Foundation in the name of Da Ponte. There was also the project for the music room and the entire redistribution of the building. Unfortunately, in the face of a significant sales request, an agreement was not reached.”

THE ANNOUNCEMENT
The real estate ad breaks the property into three lots: value of the rustic building 90 thousand euros, value of the front portion 132 thousand, value of the rear as a building lot 189 thousand: in total the request is 421 thousand euros. «This is an important request, and it is no coincidence that the property has been on sale for many years», comments De Nardi. An agreement was not reached, and the idea of a foundation remained just that. Muti’s words could therefore reopen an interest in the property. «That’s what I hope for. Today the house is on the block market and I really hope that it will be possible to start a study center on Lorenzo da Ponte.”
Undersecretary of Culture Vittorio Sgarbi takes up Maestro Muti’s complaint: «Lorenzo da Ponte’s house requires attention from the ministry with a historical relational bond or direct or pre-emptive purchase».
The Municipality had also explored the possibility of acquiring the building. «In fact – says councilor Uliana – there was a thought. However, the Municipality alone does not have the strength to raise the funds. However, I believe that this phrase by maestro Muti is a symptom of great love and great sensitivity. I share his thoughts, the homes of the greats should remain living monuments to their memory.”
