“House in the direction of the wind” or “Windward House” is located England on the western city of Gloucestershire’s highest hill overlooking the Wye Valley. Built in the 18th century, the country house was transformed into a special place within ten years – not only a residence for a retired couple, but also a gallery of Indian and African art, according to the website of The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Sometimes an art gallery in a residential home detracts from the feeling of coziness, but not in this case. The overall mood of the 623-square-meter country house is airy, calm, elegant – an almost perfect combination of architecture, landscape, population and art, say RIBA representatives.

Portal “House & Garden” visited the owners of the house – David and Jenny Clifford and learned in a conversation with them that a little more than 10 years ago, when the couple bought the house, the real estate agent described it to them as an excellent country residence and one of the most sought-after properties in Gloucestershire. properties. It was once a beautiful four-bedroom house, but the ravages of time had seriously damaged it in recent years, so the decision was made to restore it to its former glory.

The first stage of the reconstruction work was the transformation of the original country house, according to the institute’s website. On one side of it, three floors are combined into one room, creating a spacious exhibition hall, which House & Garden says is intended for David’s collection of ethnographic art, which he has been amassing since the 1970s.

The architects preserved the house’s original staircase, which connects several small rooms. The addition, with its bright interior, is larger than the old house and naturally blends in with it, but at the same time, it is designed with complex architectural solutions that give a sense of spaciousness and carefully considered views to the outside in all directions from any room in the house.

A beautifully arranged stair structure houses a grid of 50 small sculptures, and upstairs – a comfortable and bright bedroom and a study. The kitchen, which flows into a large dining room, on the ground floor is the focal point and “heart” of the downstairs, as the couple are big cooks. A beautiful garden is arranged around the garden, which is landscaped to the surrounding nature, and the owners of the house can look at it through the large windows of the living room.
