“The Hospital Volunteer: A Dedicated Role in Society”

Some get involved in a sports club, for the defense of the environment, the animal cause or alongside the poorest. Martine Burton chose the hospital. For 15 years, she has been a volunteer at the CHR de Namur.

Three times a week, she welcomes, informs, listens, and coordinates the other volunteers, these shadow workers who devote part of their free time to others. At the CHRSM, there are 45 regular volunteers, 40 in Namur and 5 in Auvelais.

According to figures from the Francophone platform for volunteering, en Belgium, approx. 736.000 people volunteer for associations, i.e. 8% of the population. On average, they there devote four hours of their time each week. 54% of these volunteers have a job, 23% are pensioners and 15% are students. A volunteer out of three is over 60 years old.

Do you also want to take the plunge? The website of the Francophone Volunteering Platform (PFV) can direct you to the associations, members of the platform, which call on volunteers.
