The heat wave in the UK – Wants us some rain

A heat wave has ravaged Britain this week, and the country’s meteorological institute, The Met Office, has extended the warning of danger to life and health.

“Temperatures will rise again this weekend, and will most likely be at its peak on Monday or Tuesday. After that, the high grades will probably fall “, the department has said in a statement.

The health authorities are “pressed to the breaking point”, according to the newspaper Independent.

“Warmest they have experienced”

Merethe K. Nilsen and Robert L. Magnus have been in London since Monday.

– I have noticed that it has been good and warm, warmer than usual and also relatively high temperatures at night. But we travel home now and avoid the worst heat that is supposed to come this weekend, Nilsen tells Dagbladet.

She says that the heat has not prevented them during the holidays.

– But we took a good break in Hyde Park yesterday in the middle of the day. The park was otherwise dry and without water in the fountains. But we took good breaks from time to time and got what we were supposed to do, she says.

Nilsen explains that the party, who have been to England many times, describes this as “the warmest they have experienced”.

Now the journey home.

– Will it be good to come home to “ordinary” Norwegian summer?

– Yes, we are looking forward to Norwegian summer now. Wish us some rain, Nilsen concludes.

“Exceptionally hot period”

According to the Met Office, the temperature can reach 40 degrees Celsius in some places, and warns of «an exceptionally hot period […] leading to far-reaching consequences for people and infrastructure ».

The Meteorological Institute further warns that they expect “serious health effects”, which “are not limited to those who are most vulnerable to extreme heat”.

If the degree reaches 40 degrees, it will be the highest temperature ever measured in the UK; the record is 38.7 degrees, measured in Cambridge in 2019, according to BBC News.

The heat waves have become warmer, longer and more frequent as a result of climate change.

– People can die from extreme weather, for example older people who can die from extreme overheating. We can prepare for warmer heat waves and extreme weather, with warnings and more information, but it will be more challenging when the events become warmer, more frequent and more extreme, says Professor Jana Sillmann, from Cicero – Center for Climate Research, previously stated to Dagbladet.
