the heat records for a month of March, dating from 1955, exceeded

It was over 23 ° C in Saint-Quentin this Tuesday, March 30, a first since 1955. In several towns of Aisne, Nord, Pas-de-Calais, Somme and Oise, the heat records for a month of March fell, 25 ° C were recorded in Watten, more than 24 in Roubaix.

Several temperature records for a month of March fell in the departments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais in the middle of the afternoon according to Météo France. In Lille (23.8 ° C), Roubaix (24.5 ° C), Douai (24.1 ° C) and in Le Touquet (23.1 ° C), the previous peaks dated back to 1968. They were beaten for several tenths of a degree. In Lille and Roubaix, the improvement is even greater than 1 ° C.

“As is often the case in spring, thanks to an anticyclone over central Europe and the Alps, the hot air is pinned to the ground”, explains Gaétan Heymes, meteorologist at Météo France. The situation is still not trivial since the seasonal norms, that is to say the average temperatures over the last thirty years, are 12 ° C.

“What is also exceptional is that practically all the towns in the region are concerned”, remarks the expert. Only Dunkirk resisted: in 1923, we recorded 24 ° C and they were not exceeded on March 30. “The measuring instruments were not the same and were perhaps imperfect”, notes Gaétan Heymes.

All records broken in Picardy

Picardy is not to be outdone. The Aisne beats all the maximum records for a month of March. In Saint-Quentin, the last dates back to 1955. It went from 23.1 ° C to 23.2 ° C.

In the Oise, Compiègne made a leap forward with 25.1 ° C, or 3 degrees more than in 2005. It was also that same year that Amiens in the Somme held its last record with 22.7 ° vs. Today the thermometer has climbed to 23.2 ° C.

The heat wave is expected to last until Thursday

It was recorded up to 25 ° C in Watten, a temperature much higher than 23.8 ° C in 1977. According to Météo France, it was notably 22.5 ° C in Arras, 23.3 ° C in Calais and 23.2 ° C in Steenvoorde. On these cities, the previous records were from 2017.

Recently, and in particular in Lille, several other records had been equaled or broken: on February 24, it had been 19 ° C; on August 8, 2020, the mercury had risen to 37.1 ° C.

The phenomenon is not confined to the northern region of France but has affected the whole country. Météo France announces that the heat wave should last until Thursday, April 1.
