The head of the Parliament’s Health Committee and a member of the Supreme Committee for Viruses at the Ministry of Higher Education stated about the Nabiah virus, which appeared in the recent period, and said that it is not a new virus but an old virus known to the World Health Organization before.
Dr. Ashraf Hatem added that the Nipah virus has existed for 20 years, its symptoms and how to treat it, and he explained that China’s announcement of the emergence of new virus infections is what caused confusion, and that the virus is limited in spread in some Asian countries.
As for the possibility of the virus or disease reaching Egypt, the head of the Parliament’s Health Committee confirmed that the virus is spreading locally so far, and that there is no great possibility of its spread, which excludes the possibility of it reaching Egypt.
The former Minister of Health confirmed that the Nipah virus had been included by the World Health Organization in the list of 16 diseases that pose the greatest threat to human health, and the virus is one of ten infectious diseases among people.
He explained that it is known that the incubation period of the Nipah virus is between 4 and 14 days, and that the incubation period has been extended for a longer time in some cases, reaching 45 days, and he indicated that the death rate from the disease ranges between 40% and 75%.
