European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that China’s reputation would be jeopardized if aid is given to Russia and an attempt is made to circumvent Western sanctions, the BBC reported.
The speech comes after today’s online China-EU summit.
“Prolonging the war in Ukraine means more problems for the world economy, and this is not in anyone’s interest,” Ursula von der Leyen wrote on Twitter after talks via video link with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Dr. Angela Stanzel named the only country in the world that can stop the war! It’s not Russia!
For his part, the Chinese leader said that Europe must ensure stability. Xi Jinping proposed holding a virtual summit in which China, the United States, Russia, the EU and NATO form a security mechanism in Europe to prevent future conflicts on the continent.
During today’s meeting Xi Jinping also suggested four important points for resolving the conflict. These include peace talks, preventing a large-scale humanitarian crisis, establishing a truce in Europe and the Eurasian continent, and preventing the escalation of local conflicts.
The Chinese president expressed his “deep regret” over the conflict in Ukraine and reiterated China’s insistence on a peaceful solution and talks between Russia and Ukraine.
European Council President Charles Michel said China had agreed that the war threatened global security and the world economy.
Important issues remain. China must:
• Stop its unjustified trade measures against Lithuania
• Lift sanctions against MEPs⁰
• Address global concerns on human and labour rights, especially in Xinjiang⁰
• Improve access and conditions for EU companies in its market. pic.twitter.com/1iY95ycZXv— Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen) April 1, 2022
