During the conference “Let’s talk about pigs … Education to save in a long-term perspective (XVI-XX)”, organized by the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the National University, he stated that the first knowledge on the subject has the faded and training institutions eliminate teaching about it.

Aguirre Lora added that currently consumerism and the market have neglected the lifestyle of savings, encouraging the population to borrow excessively to have money in their pockets.

According to the Doctor of Pedagogy, it is essential to underline that hoarding begins in the cultural and social environment, and it is urgent to recover this discipline. Furthermore, it is necessary to think of education as a historically situated practice, which is not alien to what happens in social life. “Children learn this after seeing their parents’ behavior when they ask for loans, which are then transferred to the school environment.”

It is worth remembering that in Mexico, according to the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users, 30 per cent of young people have no interest in obtaining a financial tradition and only 13 per cent of them retain part of their salary.

Meanwhile, the Multiple Banking Group, Grupo Financiero BBVA México, published an article on its website in 2021 aimed at the youth sector, with the aim of disseminating practices for the development of savings in everyday life, among which the following stand out: purchases households, in order to differentiate prices and make decisions; record expenses, keep records of income and expenses; We also recommend the use of applications that help control finances.

In history

“Saving is a practice of modernity; It began with the Christian charity of the Franciscans, who were on the alert to see where the social changes and crises that accompanied them were going. At that moment they were trying to improve the quality of life of the population and to relaunch trade “, underlined the expert.

In the case of Mexico, systems were adopted at the end of the nineteenth century, savings banks were founded, lending continued. In addition, in 1775 the National Monte de Piedad was created, the main reference financier.

This practice in newborns was promoted from October 31, 1924, at which time the potential baby was considered. Aguirre Lora pointed out that this date is known as World Savings Day, a commemoration that is currently being celebrated.

During the meeting that was part of the Cycle of Conferences “Weaving stories and building meanings around school culture”, the university student recalled that the then president of Mexico, Plutarco Elías Calles, established a series of policies for the improvement of population: promoted anti-alcoholism and literacy.

In the educational field, the speaker pointed out that everything influences the school. Starting from 1938 school vouchers were promoted and minors were asked to buy and lend them for the Expropriation of Oil.

School savings fairs have even been set up, promoting understanding of this industry and its benefits. Over time, banking institutions have paid more attention to this and offered to open children’s accounts, he added.

The textbook was not the means to teach it as such, but it was the different practices that the system included within the schools. For the expert, the cooperative is the best example of a saving method; the school passes it on.
