Putting your old worn pair of sneakers in the compost, since they are made of banana fibers, a funny idea? This green gesture could well become the new normal in the near future. In any case, in the fashion industry – one of the most polluting – designers are working on it.
Like the Spanish start-up Indianes, which has developed a process using banana fiber combined with other natural materials that would make its sneakers 100% biodegradable, decomposing two years after being buried. Others are betting on these biosourced materials such as pineapple or grape fiber, with around 30% less energy consumption in the manufacturing process.
