The greatest Czech hopes in Tokyo. Who will confirm the role of the favorite?

As many as 116 Czech athletes were originally scheduled to perform in Tokyo, eleven more than at previous summer games in Rio. However, due to a positive test for covid, at least three of them will not intervene in the fight for medals at all.

“It’s sensational that the nomination has been extended to include basketball players who played a great tournament. For us, this means other big worries with the organization, but we are very pleased, “said the head of the Czech team, Martin Doktor, for Sport.cz. “Team sports always improve team spirit at the Olympics,” he added.

According to a careful prediction by an American agency AP, which was largely taken over by other news titles, the Czech team in Tokyo will win a total of seven medals. According to forecasts, which of the Czechs has the best chance of gold?

The nomination for the Olympic Games itself is certainly a solid success for Jiří Prskavec. The holder of the bronze medal from the last games in Rio de Janeiro (2016) managed to qualify for the Olympics through former world champion Ondřej Tunka, Olympic medalist Vavřinec Hradilek and the new European champion Vít Přindiš.

It is no coincidence that the hot gold adept with the Czech flag is in the discipline of water slalom. In the independent history of the Czech Republic, since the Olympics in Atlanta (1996), Czech competitors have always been able to roll a medal out of turbulent canals.

The defender of the Olympic bronze medal Prskavec had his premiere under five rings in Rio, where he even managed to jump through the slalom in the fastest time, but contact with the goal cut him off mercilessly from the gold and silver medals.

“I’ve seen it many times, it always hurts. But looking back, I went to Rio like an enthusiastic boy who had a childhood dream come true. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the camaraderie of people in other sports. And I’m very happy that I managed the race, I made the mistake and finished third. On the other hand, I think it would be wrong if I won then, I wasn’t ready yet. Maybe it would cost me another year that I would not be able to move on, “he said self-critically in an interview with Sport.cz Jiří Prskavec.

Sparkler has built respect among slalom skiers, which was also reflected outside the race track during negotiations with the organizers of the Tokyo Games about the final form of the Olympic track. The Czech slalom skier had some doubts about the set track and did not hesitate to initiate a debate on its remake.

“At a campsite in Tokyo, I wrote on the board the year before last people to add if they thought it should be redone. And everyone wrote that yes. I took the picture, sent it to Jessica Fox (Australian slalom skier) to suggest the changes. And we found that they corresponded to what the track was originally supposed to look like. We said a big money project was done that worked, so why do it differently here. A number of competitors stood up for us, so the federation took that into account. But if it was just my opinion, nothing would change, I am not such an icon, nor is anyone else in our sport, “comments Prskavec on his initiative.

Prskavec will start the final race on Friday, July 30, at 9:00 CET.

Twenty-eight-year-old Czech canoeist Josef Dostál has an excellent balance at the Olympics. In London (2012), alongside Daniel Havel, Lukáš Trefil and Jan Štěrba, he won bronze in the 1000-meter race, in Rio silver in the single in the 1000-meter race and defended bronze in the four-kayak team together with an already proven line-up.

Once again, two disciplines await him. First he will race a kilometer race on a single kayak, instead of a four kayak he will go on a deblkanoi with Radek Šlouf, with whom they took silver at the May World Cup in Szeged.

Army Athlete of the Year 2016, Prap. Dostál is definitely not a “mere” Olympian, in his free time he honestly studies business and management at the CULS, and since childhood he has also been a passionate fisherman. Dostál thus packed his fishing gear in Japan, of course. “It has to fit in, the train doesn’t pass through it,” Dostál revealed.

According to him, the year of forced postponement helped him. “I’m a little more driven and I’ve never paddled so many kilometers,” Dostál praises.

If he reaches the final in singles in Tokyo, he will strive for medals on Tuesday, August 3 at 5:25 CET. The doubles final is scheduled for Thursday, August 5 at 5:55 CET.

The climbing premiere at the Olympics awaits Adam Ondra, who is without a doubt one of the biggest favorites in his discipline. Sport climbing will make its debut in Tokyo, just like a Czech athlete under five circles.

The three-time world champion in climbing on difficulty and world bouldering champion Ondra confirmed his excellent form at the April World Bouldering Cup, which he clearly mastered.

“Twelve people have a chance to win in bouldering. It is difficult to predict in difficulty, but it is the discipline where the performance can be most watched and it will be a surprise if I, the German Alex Megos or the Austrian Jacob Schubert, do not win, “looks for the chances favored by Ondra for Sport.cz .

The phenomenon of Czech climbing Ondra was already among the ten best climbers in the world at the age of twelve on difficulty. He has been leading the ladders of rock climbers for over ten years and is thus deservedly described by the world media as a sensation of Czech sport climbing.

The fact that the games in Tokyo have been postponed for a year has strengthened the Czech climber a bit.

“If I knew I had to lock myself in the gym for a year and climb out of it before the Olympics, I would go crazy. It is necessary to be able to find a healthy balance. In this, the past year has been a serious individual test. And I don’t think it helped some competitors and their motivation fluctuated, “says Ondra, hardened, thinks about the impact of the pandemic.

Twenty-six-year-old Czech hope in Japan is not waiting for racing in the classic format of sport climbing competitions. At the World Championships, there are traditionally a total of three sets of medals in speed climbing, bouldering and difficulty climbing in the game, but in Tokyo, Ondra will deny a single set of precious metals in a combination of all three disciplines.

The premiere finals of climbing in Olympic history will take place on Thursday, August 5, from 10:30 CET.

Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková

Of course, the quartet of Czech tennis players heading to Tokyo must not be missing from the list of medal aspirants, namely Petra Kvitová, Karolína Plíšková, Barbora Krejčíková and Markéta Vondroušová.

Czech women’s tennis is currently undoubtedly a world power. At the WTA international tennis circuit, there are currently eight Czech women in the top 100, while in the top 25 we find four Czech compatriots.

According to the AP agency, Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková are among the biggest favorites for the overall triumph of the duo.

In particular, Krejčíková, a Czech comet of recent months, drew considerable attention to herself with her double triumph at the French Open in Paris. First in a single, then in a double, where Kateřina Siniaková was her true support.

“It simply came to our notice then. But in Tokyo, the teams will be made up completely differently because of their nationality. We have never met many couples. At the same time, for example, Americans or Belarusians will be terribly strong, dangerous and unreadable will be other teams. On the contrary, everyone knows us. Our advantage is that we play with Katka for a long time. We know what to expect from each other. And we have enough experience for times when things don’t work out, which is a huge advantage in my opinion, “she commented on the Olympic prospects for Sport.cz Krejčíková.

Krejčíková belongs to the category of sportswomen, who were clearly helped by the postponed games in Tokyo. The name Krejčíková did not even figure on last year’s nomination list for high domestic competition.

“If Tokyo hadn’t been postponed, I wouldn’t have gone to singles because I was somewhere in the second hundred. And maybe I wouldn’t even fit into the doubles nomination, because Bára Strýcová was still in the game. So I can be really happy for the postponement, “states Krejčíková.

The new winner of the French Open has a number of other successes in the aforementioned doubles. She is a Wimbledon winner (2018), a two-time French Open winner (2018, 2021), a Champions Tournament finalist (2018), a Fed Cup winner (2018), an Australian Open mix winner (2019, 2020, 2021).

The tennis program in Tokyo will start on Saturday, July 24, and the women’s singles final will take place on Saturday, July 31. The debistos will play for the gold a day later, on Sunday, August 1.

Other serious adepts to win precious metals are two-time athlete of the year judoka Lukáš Krpálek, two-time world champion in the C1 500 meters category canoeist Martin Fuksa, recent European champion on the 200-meter freestyle swimmer Barbora Seemanová, multiple Czech champion sports shooter Jiří Lipták or vice-champion world track cyclist Tomáš Bábek.

The Japanese Emperor Naruhito is also scheduled to attend the opening ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday at 13:00 CEST.
