The Great Debate: Sleeping with the Window Open or Closed for a Good Night’s Sleep

Should you sleep with the window open or close your eyes with the window closed? Nothing ‘has to’ of course, but you may have asked yourself that question. Will you catch a cold if you leave the window open a little while you sleep?

Of course, there are plenty of questions about sleep. What is the best time to go to sleep? is one of them. And not being able to find your way in the evening, but still being extremely awake in the morning, how is that possible? Another question. And do you have to make your bed every day? Well, sleep too Metro regularly reaches for the pen.

Sleeping with the window open?

The website about health Gezond.nu This weekend we discussed ‘team window open’ and ‘team window closed’. The title consulted a number of experts to answer the question ‘what is better, sleeping with the window open or with the window closed?’ to come.

Open the window against flu?

You would almost say: keep your window closed if you are sick with the flu. Catching a cold will probably make things worse. That kite won’t fly. You don’t get the flu from the cold, you contract it from a flu virus. Gezond.nu: “By sleeping with the window open, you ensure that germs are sucked out more easily.”

Sleep well with the window open?

In a cool bedroom – a temperature between 15 and 19 degrees – you fall asleep faster and sleep better and deeper, says the health site. Sleep professor Eus van Someren says: “The temperature in your bedroom is important, but it is especially advisable to look for what is comfortable for you. Then the chance of peaceful and good sleep is greatest. If you continually wake up with an open window due to traffic noise or because you feel unsafe, it is better to close the window. If a closed window makes you feel stuffy or hot, leave the window open.” So find out for yourself…

There are also other problems:

Sleep and get some fresh air?

Sleeping with the window open is always good for fresh air. As described above, germs disappear from your bedroom sooner. Gezond.nu reports that an open window while sleeping also helps against air pollution.

Jelle Laverge from Ghent University: “Bedrooms are the most poorly ventilated rooms in homes: there are relatively many people here in a limited space and the interior doors are often closed. A bedroom produces very high concentrations of human waste, such as CO2, and chemicals emitted by building materials, furniture board and treated textiles.”

Get some air

If you don’t enjoy spending the night with the window open, open the windows of your bedroom wide for about ten minutes every morning. Remon Jonker, environmental and health specialist at GGD Amsterdam, refers the air pollution problem to the realm of myth. “The indoor air is almost always dirtier than the outdoor air.”

Sleep well!
