Three requirements
The road to marriage has been long.
In 1939, the prince’s grandfather, Prince Gustav Albrecht of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, wrote a will with strict requirements for the prince’s future spouse.
It said that she would have to be “Aryan, noble and Protestant” if he was to inherit Berleburg Castle in the town of Bad Berleburd, in eastern Germany.
His fiancée, Carina Axelsson, did not meet the requirements, the newspaper writes.
The prince’s future bride, who was previously a model and is now a children’s author, has a Mexican mother, was born a Catholic and her parents are not noble either.
Prince Gustav has for many years worked with his family to get the rule changed.
