the government no longer obeys foreign diktats – Il Tempo

Davide Vecchi

Time is a gentleman. And in this case a few days were enough for the truth to emerge and to restore the correct representation of the facts not only to public opinion but above all to the many commentators capable of doing anything to delegitimize the Meloni government who had unleashed themselves against Minister Piantedosi for the attitude held in Brussels during the last meeting of Interior Ministers. On the occasion, Matteo Piantedosi had asked to delve deeper into an amendment to the European Union crisis regulation which would have given a sort of safe conduct to NGOs even in cases in which they had been involved in criminal activities in human trafficking. The owner of the Ministry of the Interior did not want to scupper the ongoing negotiation and in fact did not take the floor to express a contrary opinion but informally asked for the text to be explored in depth and politely pointed out that the discussion and vote on the regulation were not even at the agenda.

The Catania judge always winks to the left: the previous political ruling

For having defended the national interest and for having done so with pragmatism, he was sandblasted for days in the newspapers and with indignant declarations from the exponents of the left who, in essence, reproached him for not having obeyed with due promptness the wishes of Paris and Berlin. Just as has happened for decades in Brussels where the representatives of Italian governments, in particular the technical ones, silently obey foreign diktats. Luckily this is no longer the case. Now in Rome there is a political government that, before anything else, has received a clear mandate from the voters: to defend the national interest. Piantedosi, who that day in Brussels was constantly in touch with Giorgia Meloni maintaining the shared (and right) line, defended this national interest of ours in the correct way: firmly but without tearing.

Berlin hits the granite of Rome: the German press praises the government

And thanks to this renewed determination – which the German newspapers themselves recognize in the Meloni Government – the negotiation was unblocked yesterday and was finalized on a more balanced basis. The controversial amendment on NGOs was downgraded in the “recitals” as Italy wanted. European regulations take a step forward but without unacceptable flaws. With all due respect to the many xenophile provincials in our country who, inexplicably, believe that it is always necessary to support the interests of our European partners even when they are contrary to our national interest.
