The future Joséphine Baker high school, in Hips, is gradually taking shape

On the five-hectare site next to the gendarmerie and the rescue center of Hanches, the works of the Joséphine Baker high school are going well. While on December 11, 2021, the first stone of the “high school of the future” was laid, the main buildings of the establishment, which will accommodate 1,200 students in general, technological and professional streams, have now come out of the ground.

And several major challenges will have to be met during and after the works: “We are committed to E3C2 performance,” explains Sébastien Gay, in charge of real estate operations at the Centre-Val de Loire regional council. Behind this technical language are hidden environmental requirements.

In concrete terms, the school will have to respect a level of performance, whether in terms of energy consumption or greenhouse gas emissions. “The goal is to be more virtuous. This is a reflection that we have had since the start of the project, that is to say 2018”, continues Sébastien Gay.

To do this, the contracting authority, Bouygues Immobilier, called on, among others, the Envirobat Center association, which participates in the construction of the school by sharing its knowledge of sustainable construction: “We aim to network regional actors and to promote the synergies that can be achieved through the themes covered by sustainable construction”, specifies the project manager of Envirobat Centre, Emmanuel Mazodier.

“Much of the earth excavated on the site will be reused on site to make bricks. »

On the future high school in Hips, for example, part of the interior walls of the entrance hall will be made of mud brick: “A large part of the earth excavated on the site will be reused on site to make bricks”, adds he.

For this, a machine already present on the site compacts this clay soil to make bricks: “No treatment and no firing are carried out on this soil, unlike the concrete blocks”, continues Emmanuel Mazodier. “It also limits the use of trucks which, if this soil could not be reused on site, would have had to be transported outside. »

Why open a “high school of the future” at the start of the 2023 school year in Hips?

Biosourced materials will be used in the construction of the buildings and 90% of the companies working on the site and commissioned by the real estate giant Bouygues come from the region and mainly from Eure-et-Loir.

With regard to energy consumption and the environmental impact of the school, several technologies will be implemented. This is the case of geocoolinga technique for cooling buildings that consumes much less energy than conventional air conditioning: “The water is drawn from the ground and, thanks to an inverted heat pump system, it is cooled to ensure the cooling of the building”, popularizes Sébastien Gay .A visit was organized this Tuesday, July 12 with the presence of companies working on the site and elected officials from the territory.

No delivery delays but an increased budget

For heating, a geothermal system will be used, coupled with a pellet boiler: “We can, if necessary, use gas as well. In addition, 800 m² of solar panels will be installed.

Delivery times will be respected. “The set will be completed by March-April 2023, for an opening in September. According to the person in charge of real estate operations at the regional council, the stocks of materials were anticipated despite a general shortage of raw materials.

On the other hand, the total budget of the school has been revised upwards: “It was initially announced at 60 million euros. It will ultimately be between 64 and 66 million,” explains Sébastien Gay.

As a reminder, a gymnasium, a multipurpose room, a showroom, a boarding school and a fablab – a place giving access to digital manufacturing tools as well as material resources for innovation – are also under construction on the site.
