The Florida project will promote Short Sea Shipping

The first face-to-face bilateral meeting of the Florida Project Working Group, held at the headquarters building of the Secretary of the Navy, resulted in the creation of a project to promote cabotage and Short Sea Shipping (TMCD). This project acquires relevance given the high potential of maritime cargo between the ports of the Gulf and Florida, currently estimated at 945 thousand 441 tons.

The bilateral meeting of the Working Group was attended by representatives of the American Association of Port Authorities, the Consul of Miami in Mexico Jonathan Chait, representatives of the Ports of Florida, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economy, Customs of Mexico , Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the National Association of Private Transport, the Mexican Association of Shipping Agents, the Confederation of Industrial Chambers, the National Association of Importers and Exporters of the Mexican Republic.

According to the Executive Director of Priority Maritime-Port Projects, the development of new Cabotage and TMCD commercial routes will allow the use of the vocation of the Mexican ports Altamira, Tampico, Tuxpan, Veracruz, Coatzacoalcos, Dos Bocas and Salina Cruz and the ports from Florida Panama City, Port Everglades, Port Manatee, Tampa Bay and Miami. Therefore, the project will make it possible to enhance their strengths, such as the type of cargo they handle, the connectivity they allow, the security they have and the sustainability in the management of their operations.

Taking into account that Florida’s seaports handle more than 40% of total containerized cargo exports, in addition to representing 30% of US exports, destined for Latin America and the Caribbean, the scope of the new The cabotage and TMCD project will promote cooperation and establish coordination mechanisms for the use of the logistics platform of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and its interconnection between the ports of the Gulf of Mexico and Florida.
