Ian Haydon is 29 years old and lives in Seattle, United States of America. He is one of the participants in the human clinical trial of the vaccine developed by Moderna Therapeutics to combat COVID-19 and the faces of the first known side effects. According to the scientific journal Stat, he is one of three participants to present adverse reactions to the vaccine.
Fainting and high fevers are the reactions mentioned, but they were not immediately disclosed. Although Ian Haydon was not shy about speaking to media outlets like CNN or CNBC, showing pride in being part of the tests, he preferred to keep the side effects to himself as a precaution.
«I understand that sharing the story will be scary for some people. (…) I hope you don’t have any kind of general antagonism towards vaccines or this vaccine ”, said the American in statements reported by Stat.
What prompted Ian Haydon to talk about the topic now? He says he wants to prevent a vaccine from being placed on the market that may still pose some dangers. It should not be a process rushed by the despair of some people.
“The reality of vaccine development is that it can only be rushed to a certain extent,” says the participant in the initial trial of Moderna. «They have to move at the speed at which they move. And stories like this about what happened to me matter because they shape the approval process, ”he says.
Of the 45 people who participated in the Moderna trial, four had grade 3 reactions, that is, severe or clinically significant but which did not pose a deadly threat. The drugmaker said in the meantime that three participants received the highest dose of the test and had side effects. There was also a fourth case, referring to someone who received a more moderate dose and who had only one dermatitis at the infection site.
In addition to the Moderna tests, there are also signs of similar side effects in an essay by Sechenov University in Moscow, which published a report reporting similar reactions. A group of 20 volunteers received an injection of the experimental vaccine and some had a slight increase in temperature and headaches. The symptoms disappeared within 24 hours.
