The first batches of Vietnamese grapefruit exported to the United States

The addition of Vietnamese grapefruit to the list of fruits exported to the US market dates back to six years ago. Eventually, the United States allowed the first batches of this fruit to be imported. The province of Bên Tre (South) is the first locality to export it.

In order to highlight the Vietnamese grapefruit in general and green skin grapefruit of Ben Tre province in particular, the Provincial People’s Committee, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, celebrated November 28 as the date of export of the first batches of this fruit to the United States, in the presence of representatives of local organizations, the ministries concerned, the United States Embassy and in particular local cooperatives.

During the ceremony, films were shown on the procedures and the journey of grapefruit exported to the United States. Chanh Thu Fruit Export Group is the first company to export fruit. On this occasion, the People’s Committee of the Province of Ben Tre also delivered the food safety certificates to the companies.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the United States represents a potential market for fresh fruit from Vietnam. Every year this country consumes 12 million tons of fresh fruit while its domestic supply satisfies only 70% of the demand, the rest, equal to 3.6 million tons, must be imported from abroad.

Vietnam has 105,400 hectares under pomelo cultivation, with a production of nearly 905,000 tons, with various varieties specific to each region. In particular, the Mekong delta has about 32,000 ha allowing for a production of about 369,000 tons.
