The Feldberg is more than just a tourism hotspot – Feldberg

Many know the highest mountain in the Black Forest from winter sports weekends or extensive hikes through the dreamy landscapes. But the Feldberg has more to offer.

This is what makes Feldberg so special

The Feldberg sets some records. It is not only the highest mountain in Germany outside the Alps, but also offers the oldest nature reserve in Baden-Württemberg. This is a wonderful place to relax, as there is a very healthy subalpine climate at this altitude. Three districts also come together on the mountain: Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Waldshut and Lörrach.

That’s what people live on
“Feldberg clearly lives from tourism,” says Mayor Johannes Albrecht. Feldberg is the community with the second highest tourism intensity in the Black Forest. This indicates the relationship between residents and overnight stays. For this reason, most people work in the hotel industry and tourist services.

That’s how the place advertises
The official motto is “The highest in the Black Forest”. There is also “Home of skiing since 1891”.

That’s how old the place is
The Feldberg was first mentioned in a document in 983. The municipality of Feldberg itself, on the other hand, was not founded until 1939. This was done with a view to creating an Olympic village, reveals Albrecht. Feldberg in its current form with the districts of Altglashütten, Bärental, Falkau, Neuglashütten and Feldberg-Ort has existed since the municipal reform in the early 1970s.

Everyone knows this historical detail
Feldberg is the cradle of skiing in Central Europe. In 1891, the French diplomat Dr. Robert Pilet first used his wooden boards, which he got to know on his travels in Scandinavia, on the Feldberg Ski.

So your chances of finding an apartment here are good

This is a special challenge, according to Albrecht. “We have an unbelievable number of people who want to move to Feldberg because it is very attractive to live and work here. They simply have the fantastic nature right on their doorstep.” The transport connection to Freiburg is also very good due to the large number of tourists.

This is where the locals meet

In the cozy inns in the valley towns. In winter, of course, also on the slopes and cross-country ski runs.

Who comes from Feldberg
The presenter and entertainer Hansy Vogt was born in Feldberg in 1967. In 2008 he was appointed official Black Forest Ambassador.

You should definitely not say that about Feldberg
“That we’re a mass tourism place. That’s something we don’t like at all, because it’s not true,” says the mayor. There are individual days in winter when, of course, many visitors come in one day. But in the valley towns it is always peaceful and very quiet, reports Albrecht. The fact that Feldberg is only reduced to the summit is also something that the Feldbergers cannot have at all.

“For me, Feldberg is my origin, home and the green oasis of happiness.” Hansy Vogt (54), entertainer and official Black Forest ambassador, Feldberg

That’s why people who have moved away like to come back

Because of the peace, the climate and the farsightedness.

This is where you should eat
Feldberg has one of the best Black Forest cakes. The mayor enthusiastically reveals that the “Zum Gscheeten Beck” café in Feldberg-Bärental is particularly recommended in this respect.

You should definitely visit this place
It is recommended that you not only explore the summit, but also the valley towns. The area around the threshold pond is a real insider tip. The new playground on the threshold pond with the mini golf course is particularly suitable for families.

This custom is still maintained today
The Laurentius Festival is undoubtedly one of the most important folk festivals on the Feldberg and in the entire region. It is celebrated in honor of Saint Lawrence, who was martyred in Rome in 258. It takes place on August 10th and starts with a mountain mass at the Laurentius Chapel, right next to the Todtnauer Hütte. Afterwards the shepherds, farmers, guests and locals meet to celebrate together in the Feldberger Hütten.
