The Fear-Inducing Swedish Stridsvagn 122 Tanks: 9-Week Crash Course for Ukrainian Troops

In nine weeks they managed what normally takes Swedish soldiers 18 months. Ukrainian troops were given a crash course to learn the modern Stridsvagn 122 tanks from Sweden. Their greatest strength is the armor-piercing missile that can penetrate trees and buildings without changing direction.

Stockholm provided Ukraine with 10 Stridsvagn 122 battle tanks, which are a modified version of the German Leopard 2 tanks. The Swedes produced them in the late 1990s. According to the Ukrainians, the Russians are mainly afraid of the high accuracy of these tanks’ armor-piercing missiles.

“This armor-piercing projectile is very effective. The arrow made of tungsten is 70 centimeters long and can penetrate 70 centimeters of armor. It works wonders. It penetrates everything. You can shoot it through buildings or trees and it still doesn’t change its trajectory, which is lucky,” he describes Ukrainian soldier Volodymyr.

According to the Ukrainians, the tank inspires great fear and the enemy is afraid of it. “I’m also sure that some people are a little envious of us. Those who fight with other types. The front of the machine has particularly strong armor. It can withstand a direct hit,” explains tank commander Vitaly, adding that the most important thing is the life of the crew. “It doesn’t matter what weapons you use, the most important thing is the personnel,” he adds.

It was the tank crews who had to complete a course in Sweden, which the local army studies for 18 months. The Ukrainians practiced 12 hours a day and mastered it in nine weeks. “At first it was difficult, but then we got used to it,” says Vitalij.
