The Fall of Rutte IV Cabinet: Major Shifts in Dutch Politics and Preparations for November Elections

The fall of the Rutte IV cabinet has caused major shifts in Dutch politics. Parties are already preparing for the elections in November. NU.nl lists the changes in the political guard for you.

VVD

After thirteen years, the era will come to an end in November anyway.Mark Rutte. The longest-serving prime minister of our country announced that he would leave politics after the fall of his fourth cabinet. With that, he also steps down as party leader of the VVD.

Dilan Yesilgöz is the main candidate to succeed Rutte as party leader. She has already put herself forward as a candidate and is supported by the top of the VVD. If she also wants to succeed Rutte as prime minister, she must lead the VVD to election victory in November.

A (serious) opponent has not yet reported. Big names such as Klaas Dijkhoff, Edith Schippers, Jeanine Hennis and party chairman Sophie Hermans already said they weren’t hungry.

D66

Just like Rutte also returns Sigrid Kaag not after the elections. The D66 leader is leaving politics because it asks too much of her family. Kaag has long been seriously threatened and heavily protected. That led to a lot of anger among her political colleagues.

Robert Jett wants to succeed Kaag as party leader and party leader. The outgoing minister for Climate and Energy thinks it is time for a new generation. In 2020 he made room so that Kaag could become a party leader, now he wants to do it himself.

Jetten has competition from the D66 member who lives in China Ton Visser and former D66 Member of Parliament Wassila Hachi, it was announced on Tuesday. That two seem to have no chance against Jetten in advance.

Group chairman Jan Paternotte has already announced that he will not be available as a party leader. He is expected to be on the list for the parliamentary elections. Other leaders, such as outgoing ministers Robbert Dijkgraaf (Education) and Ernst Kuipers (Public Health), have not yet spoken out about their plans.

CDA

Wopke Hoekstra announced immediately after the fall of the Rutte IV cabinet that he would not become a party leader in the new elections. Hoekstra feels “more of an administrator than a professional politician”. He has not (yet) completely withdrawn from politics.

The latter does apply to group chairman Peter Heerma. According to him, there are “incredibly talented young people” in the group who can take over from him.

Including outgoing ministers Hugo Young (Public Housing and Spatial Planning) and Hanke Bruins Slot (Home Affairs) have already announced that they do not want to be on the election list either. They may be open to a return as minister. Outgoing Minister of Social Affairs Karen van Gennip has said that she does want to continue in the Chamber.

The CDA takes the time to find a new leader. The party board will present a preferred candidate on August 14.

Christian Union

The ChristenUnie is the only coalition party to emerge relatively ‘unscathed’ from the fall of the cabinet. Miriam Baker succeeded Gert-Jan Segers as party leader in the House of Representatives at the beginning of this year. She is the only candidate for the lead in the upcoming elections.

Bikker called co-ruling in the Rutte IV cabinet a “marriage of convenience”. For a possible next cabinet, she excludes cooperation with the radical right-wing parties PVV and FVD.

CU loses with Carol Schouten a familiar face. The demissionary deputy prime minister says goodbye to national politics after “twelve intense years”.

PvdA/GroenLinks

PvdA and GroenLinks will participate in the upcoming elections with a joint list and one programme. The members of both parties voted in favor of this on 17 July. Much to the delight of party leaders Atje Kuken (PvdA) and Jesse Claver (Green Left).

The big question remains who will be the face of the collective group. The name of Frans Timmermans falls often, but Klaver and Kuiken have not yet spoken out about it. “You will be told that,” Klaver said on Monday.

Who is definitely not on the list is Corinne Ellemeet. She was second on the GroenLinks list in the previous elections. Ellemeet is becoming more and more to assure about the “cold climate” in which politicians have to do their job and does not want to enter the House of Representatives again.

Other parties

Opposition parties will sense their chance now that the established political order of recent years is faltering. Many shifts are not obvious. The SP (Lillian Marijnissen) and the Party for the Animals (Esther Oldhand) have already nominated their party leaders as party leaders.

PVV leader Geert Wilders being kicked campaign immediately after it was announced that the elections are on November 22. The PVV has been the largest opposition party for years. Wilders is on paper the only member of the party and will therefore also be the party leader in these elections.

Earlier this year, the BoerBurgerBeweging was the big winner of the Provincial Council elections and thus became the largest in the Senate. According to the polls the BBB will also be a serious factor to take into account in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Currently sitting alone Caroline van der Plas in the House of Representatives. She will also be on the list as party leader in November.

Many eyes are also focused on Peter Omzigt. He has been an independent Member of Parliament since his departure from the CDA, but is very popular among voters. In any case, Omtzigt will not join the BBB. He will soon make a decision about his future.
