The Failed Remake: Why Leonid Gaidai’s Comedies Should Never be Recreated

The picture was smashed to smithereens.

Comedies by Leonid Gaidai are considered timeless classics. The director’s fans believe that it was in these films that all the necessary components came together – from the director’s talent and a wonderful plot to brilliant actors. That is why an attempt to reshoot them turns into a failure.

The 2014 remake of the Prisoner of the Caucasus proved this. The role of Nina was given to the popular actress Anastasia Zadorozhnaya, and the image of Shurik was tried on by the star of “Interns” Dmitry Sharakois. And from such a substitution, the audience was left in shock.

The film was mercilessly criticized, it failed at the box office. On the Web, users did not spare negative comments. The performers of the main roles especially got away from them: for example, Shurik Sharakois was called a pathetic imitation of the original.

“They don’t play, but grimacing in front of the camera”, “The plot is completely torn from the original. Terrible useless game. We can say that when watching, you constantly compare the game with the original characters and actors, but it’s necessary to try to play so bad for famous actors”, “Shurik tries to copy intonation, gestures, but it still doesn’t look like”, – the audience noted in their reviews.
