… 60 years after the first cinematographic version of the musical, Steven Spielberg tackles the “West side story” myth. If Robert Wise’s version (1961) has still not aged the slightest, the director of “Encounter of the Third Kind” brings to it his virtuosity, his technique, his modernity. First good idea: not to update the narration and keep it in the 60s.
Adapted from Romeo and Juliet in the Bronx, the story sees two opposing gangs: the Jets (young white working class from Irish immigrants, Italians…), the second from the second generation of Puerto Ricans. The question is still very topical: who is the more American of the two?
