Scientists from the British University of Bath argue that while one night of poor sleep does not have a significant effect on our metabolism, drinking coffee as a means of invigorating and shaking off sleep residues can have a negative effect on blood sugar regulation.

The results of the study showed that one night of restless sleep did not worsen blood glucose and insulin levels after breakfast (compared to indicators after a night of restful sleep). In the meantime, if you drink a strong cup of black coffee before breakfast, it will significantly increase the blood glucose response to breakfast – by about 50%.

So a study by physiologists at the University of Bath found that while drinking coffee after a poor night’s sleep can help cope with sleepiness, it can also trigger another problem, namely limiting your body’s ability to handle the sugar in your breakfast.

Professor James Betts, co-director of the Center for the Study of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism at the British University of Bath, who led the study, explained: “We know that nearly half of us wake up in the morning and drink coffee before doing anything – intuitively. The more tired we feel, the stronger our coffee. This research is important and has far-reaching implications for human health, as until now we had limited knowledge of how it affects our body, in particular the regulation of metabolism and blood sugar levels. “

“Simply put, blood sugar regulation is disrupted if the first thing our body gets upon waking up is coffee, especially after a night of restless sleep. We can improve the situation, and for this we need to eat something first, and then drink coffee if we still feel the need for it. This knowledge can have significant health benefits for all people. ”

In other words, scientists recommend drinking coffee after breakfast, not before.
