The EU unanimously agrees on new sanctions against Russia

It is not yet clear what the sanctions are, but the EU has announced that it will punish Russia shortly after the Kremlin on Monday recognized the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian confirmed the agreement on the sanctions shortly after attending an extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirms to TV 2 that Norway will join the sanctions.

– It is natural for us to agree to those sanctions. It is a European reaction to what Russia did yesterday and clearly did something that goes beyond Ukraine’s territorial integrity. It is natural to stand together with our European partners, says Støre to TV 2.

On Tuesday, the situation escalated further, when Vladimir Putin received permission from the National Assembly to use military forces outside Russia’s borders. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg confirms that the Russians’ military presence in eastern Ukraine over the past 24 hours.

US President Joe Biden will talk about the situation at 7 pm Norwegian time, and US authorities have announced heavy sanctions as a result of Russia’s aggression in the area.
