In partnership with Bouygues Telecom, Free Mobile, SFR and Orange, RATP announces that public transport, but also stations, are now 100% covered in 4G.
4G in the metro in Île-de-France has been a long-standing subject. We were talking about it more than 5 years ago, when Free Mobile had signed a deployment agreement with the RATP in December 2014. After several delays, the project finally came to an end: the entire RATP network is covered by 100% in 4G, according to the Paris Autonomous Transport Authority.

Train and station coverage
In a press release, RATP joins 4 national operators, Bouygues Telecom, Free Mobile, SFR and Orange, to announce this important event for internet users in the capital. We are not talking here only of the coverage of the metro cars, but also of the stations and tunnels which are an integral part of the underground network of public transport.
To deploy these technologies on the whole network, RATP and the telephone operators had to manage in perfect cooperation many technical constraints with the installation of 300 km of cables, 3000 antennas and 280 technical rooms on often underground infrastructures and sometimes centenary. 321 telecom sites have been set up on the network to cover 304 underground stations (access, platforms and tunnels).
For RATP, the challenge is not only to allow transport users to download the latest fashionable application, listen to a podcast or share photos on social networks. It is above all a matter of offering direct monitoring of important information on the network ” This service notably allows easier access to passenger information to make journeys easier and more pleasant (RATP and Via Navigo applications, RATP Twitter accounts dedicated to Traveler information…) ».
As a reminder, the first city in France to have fully covered its metro service in 4G was Toulouse in 2017.
