The Editorial. Europe in the fog

The scenario of the Christmas holidays is being written. One week before the opening of the Christmas markets in Alsace, those who doubt the arrival of a new wave of Covid-19 in France only have to look at the evolution of the contamination rate in the border departments , in particular those of the Grand Est region. The virus is spreading quickly and everywhere. The Bas-Rhin has an incidence rate of 163 when the national average is 130. The Haut-Rhin showed, this Friday, a level of 207 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Side hospitalizations, the number of patients continues to increase. Vaccinated people are not absent from intensive care units, but their number is much lower than that of the unvaccinated.

Home of the epidemic on a planetary scale, Europe is experiencing an unprecedented turn of the screw. Re-containment is not excluded in Germany; it will be effective from Monday in Austria where the leaders have decided to introduce the vaccination obligation from the 1is next February… Considering that necessity is law, the government of the coalition formed in Vienna by the conservatives and the ecologists is breaking a taboo within the European Union. A dike blew up. There is no doubt that the measure will stain elsewhere in Europe if the epidemic were to prove out of control and the hospital services saturated.

France is not at this stage. She is not immune. The government has entered a race against time. The aim is to further increase the level of double vaccination (50 million French people) and to ramp up on the booster dose (5 million). It is all the more urgent that the obligation to vaccinate caregivers, without possible compensation by a negative test, deprives the sector of arms and skills, even though the hospital is already weakened by a shortage of personnel. This obligation sets Guadeloupe ablaze. The risk is to create a snowball effect which would see this question of the obligation of caregivers to vaccinate with a social anger which has not been extinguished since the movement of the yellow vests. Maintaining national cohesion will not be easy in such uncertain conditions.
